I am pleased to day these words in recognition of the good work
carried out by the Pyoe Khinn Youth Association, one of several Burmese people
support groups in Malaysia.
Considering the nightmarish condition under which people in this
part of the word seeking refuge for personal and family safety suffer in Malaysia,
there will be no physical, emotional or spiritual support for distressed asylum
seekers if not for organization like Pyoe Khinn Youth Association.
This association has, as its primary objective, developing the
human resource of Burmese youth in the country. This is a noble case, for it
enables the young Burmese refugees to learn skills that will better equip them
when resettled.
In this aspect, Pyoe Khinn Youth Association’s running of a
certificate course in electrical and electronics engineering is admirable. This
programme is now being evaluated by Petaling Jaya-based Paramount College,
for possible recognition as a formal training course.
Pyoe Khinn Youth Association was started in Puchong, Selangor,
by five young Burmese in August 2006 with the aim of getting Burmese residing
temporarily in Malaysia to become more self-reliant; to learn more skills while
here, so as to become useful citizens of theglobal community. It is now run by a
committee of 17, and has establishes a website-
www.pyoekhinnyouth.blogspot.com/ to enable to be linked with similar
groups worldwide.
It is estimated that there are 50,000 Burmese refugees in the
country, and only a little over30,000 of them have been registered as refugees
with the United HighCommissioner for Refugees in Malaysia.
As a Malaysian, I am ashamed that these people, running away
from their home country out of fear for the safety of themselves and their
families, denied the right to live free and in dignity, are not given the dignity of
human living in my country. Leave alone all the other persecution from the likes
of such as RELA.
I am very impressed with the work of Pyoe Khinn Youth Association
and its committee, and I wish them every success in all their endeavours.
